Ravenna
In
1317 he settled in Ravenna at the invitation of
Guido Novello da Polenta, when the town, in consequence
of the wars between the Guelphs and Ghibellines,
passed under the control of the da Polenta Family.
He dedicated one of the most beautiful passage of
the entire Divine Comedy to Francesca Da Polenta
(well known has Francesca da Rimini as she get married
to Gianciotto Malatesta) “Amor che nullo amato
Amar Perdona…” in which he describes
with sadness her love for her brother-in-love Paolo
Malatesta, that brought her to death in Gradara
Castle. He decided to die in Ravenna where are preserved
his mortal remains in a small neoclassical cloister,
well known as Dante’s Tomb adjacent the church
of San Francesco where he used to retire to pray
and where is funeral was held. The surroundings
area is called “zona dantesca” and silence
is mandatory. Near the sepulchral monument there
are Dante’s museum and Centro dantesco onlus,
where are collected as a whole all the testifying
that connect the poet with the town of Ravenna.
